This document has been prepared by the National Law Enforcement Policy Center in response to the IACP initiative on promotion of officer safety, an effort that is also the focus of the Office of the United States Attorney General. It is organized into brief examinations of individual law enforcement functions and situations that are most often correlated with officer felonious deaths, assaults, accidental deaths and injuries. Each section provides an overview of the topic and a synopsis of best practices and procedures for stopping or mitigating the death and injury of officers. While these recommended practices and procedures are not new, the increase in officer deaths and assaults over the past several years suggests that these and related professional practices need reinforcement.
